Lumia Nokia 1020 is blessed for its 41 Mpix camera

Among photography buffs there is a kind of tribe, of which I am part for good or for evil, to whom we like to take photos but also attract us much the cameras, lenses and accessories. We really enjoyed the “apparatuses” necessary to make photos. This has a chance and that, looking for the perfect house, the perfect lens or accessory essential, finish by spending more time testing cameras and lenses to take pictures themselves. It is a very real danger.

Photo enthusiasts and especially the “photographic Homebrew” almost unanimously consider that camera phones or smartphones are practically a joke. There are very prestigious photographers who get upset when you mention the pictures taken with mobile phones. They feel that, for them, what comes out of a moving picture can not be considered. I’m afraid this to we are attending, and even the future that is about to come, will pass over them like a steamroller. But that’s another story. I do not want to lose sight of the amazing technological marvel subject of this article.

A phrase that is also much said among amateur photographers and aims to put some sanity in the endless pursuit of the perfect photographic equipment is this: “the best camera is the one you have with you”. That is, a camera, however good, is of little use if the occasion arises suddenly Photographic find us without our super-camera on top, probably saved at home and with nothing at hand with which to capture that moment that comes before our eyes. Obviously meet face to face with an important moment and not have a camera available can be a little mishap.

And here is where you enter the camera phones and smartphones change posed as the Nokia Lumia 1020. So far, a “serious” or aspirations, photographer because it is not always possible to carry a big camera, you had to settle for one of two options: carry a high quality compact or bridge or simply hope to attract those Photos unforeseen.

That’s changing a lot. We are witnessing the launch of a new generation of mobile camera quality, as this Nokia Lumia 1020, the Sony Xperia Z1, the smartphone LG G2 or the intersection of mobile and camera Samsung S4 Zoom as the most prominent examples. Each brings own the challenge of making great pictures with a mobile solutions, but all agree on equip-megapixel sensor.

Nokia Lumia 1020

Let us briefly review the set of technical decisions using these mobile rivals Nokia because I think it illustrates very well the situation. LG, Samsung and Sony include sensors 13, 16 and 20.7 megapixels respectively. And in the case of the models of Sony and Samsung the sensor is the same physical size as most compact cameras, and therefore higher than usual on mobile. The physical size of the sensor LG is somewhat lower. Additionally models LG and Samsung also feature optical image stabilizer on the lens, in smartphones LG and Sony are also of great luminosity.

As you can see, all provide very interesting things, but none of them provide all. Well, none except the title of this article: Nokia Lumia 1020. Sensor has a whopping 41 megapixels, a physical size similar to that of bridge cameras, midway between compact and DSLR APS-C. It also has a huge target brightness signed by none other than Carl Zeiss and is equipped with optical stabilization. Of course, you can say that, on paper, has it all.

What is most striking is that brutal resolution 41 Mpix, although dosed a different way than we are used because not all will eventually be part of your photos depends on the aspect ratio that you set with the camera.

This huge 7,712 × 5,360 sensor points are effective 34 Mpix (7,712 × 4,352 pixels) to take pictures with 16:9 TVs planes and 38 Mpix (7,136 × 5,360 pixels) images which have the aspect ratio 4:3 TVs lifetime. To understand this, think that the sensor is larger than any of the photos you can do with it size. The format chosen will use the entire width of the sensor or all of your high, but not both at once.

While this may seem like a disadvantage, it seems much better than the usual choice, which is that the sensor has the more square format, usually 4:3 and 16:9 pictures are cut on it, which ultimately wants say they have less actual pixels of the desirable.

And what is the purpose of incorporating a sensor of 41 megapixels on a mobile? What to do then with such great photos? Well, this is the main novelty of the Lumia 1020. It seems that in order to avoid a bulky lens, but still have zoom (up to 3x), engineers at Nokia have “simulated” zoom effect “wasting” megapixels.

The system is as follows: first photo is done with fixed focal length is 25mm in 27mm 16:9 and 4:3, and after making a photo with it on screen, it’s when You can zoom on the touch screen and crop the part of the photo you want to stay. Sounds a little weird, but it works very well, as you can see in the photos that show below.
