Google Voice, Viber are helping people of Nepal After Earthquake
Nepal was hit by a major earthquake this weekend and some tech companies are trying to help the country. Viber, Google Voice, T-Mobile, and others have announced they will discount calls to and from Nepal to help with communication. T-Mobile will offer free calls. Viber will temporarily turn off Viber Out billing and that’ll make calls free.
Google Voice is not removing all costs from its service but it will discount them. Calls to Nepal normally cost 19 cents per minute and Google has announced it will bring that price down to 1 cent per minute. Google didn’t make the service free because it was concerned spammers would abuse the system.
Unfortunately, many phone lines and other communication systems are down or entirely destroyed in Nepal, making communication impossible despite these offers.
