The Blue Brain

blue brain

The Brain institute of the ecole polytechnique Federal de Lausanne in Switzerland founded this project in may 2005. They studied of brain architectural and functional principles. The founding director Henry Makram and co –director Felix Schurmann and Sean Hill just headed this project. The blue gene using a supercomputer which is running Michael Hines’s Neuron software, this simulation does not consist normally of an artificial, but it’s involve a biological neurons which is realistic model. It is hoped that it will eventually shed light on the nature of consciousness. You can read more in our other technology related article or blog.

There are many sub project which include the cajal blue brain projects and its coordinateted by the supercomputing and visualization center of Madrid and also others operate by university and some private laboratories.

The primary goal was completed in December 2006 which was the simulation with a rat neocortical column and that’s considered by some researchers to be the smallest function unit of the neocortex. (The thought part to be responsible for higher function such as conscious thought) the human columns which is about 2mm tall and has a diameter of 0.5mm and its contains about 60,000 neurons and the rat neocortical columns are very similar in instructive but contains only 1000 neurons. The scientist Makram did map the types of neuorons and their connections in such a column between 1995 and 2005. You can read more in our other technology related article or blog.

The project reported in end November 2007 for the first phase and deliver a data driven process for creating, validating and researching the neocortical column.

The first single cellular model was completed in 2005.in 2008 the first artificial cellular neocortical column of 10,000 was built. A cellular mesocircuite of 100 neocortical columns with a millions cells was built in 2008. The rate brain of cellular is planned in 2014 with 100 mesocircuite or with totally a hundred million cells. finally we can predict that a cellular human brain predict by 2023 which is equivalent to 1000 rat brains with a total of a hundred billion cells.

The project is currently being busy with them and publishing of primary results in scientific literature and pursuing two separate goals after the column get finishes:

  1. The column simulation to allow for parallel simulation of large numbers of connected column with the ultimate goal of simulation a whole.
  2. Neocortex (which in humans consists of about 1 million cortical columns).

The Swiss government and the Future and Emerging Technologies Flagship grant the fund of the project primilary from the European commission and secondary and also some donations from private individuals. The EPFL bought blue gene computer with reduce cost because it easy prototype and IBM was interested in exploring how different applications could perform on the machine.

The film director Noah Hutton made a documentary with each installment detailed and full year of long working of the project of 10 part at the EPFLA .The documentary is planned to be released in 2020 after having the started filming in 2009.the editing has finished after the year filming. The Henry Markram contributes regular basis the rest of team provide an insight into the Blue Brain project while similar research tasks across the world are touched on. You can read more in our other technology related article or blog.

The Magerit supercomputer used the cajol blue brain.Cajal. The technical university coordinate the cajol blue brain and uses the facilities of super computing and Madrid visualization center and its computer magerit. The Cajal Institute participates in this collaboration. The research main line being persuades at cajal blue brain includes neurological experimentation and computer simulations. Main lines of research currently being pursued at Cajal Blue Brain include neurological experimentation and computer simulations. Nanotechnology is the latest designed brain microscope which plays an important role in research plans. You can read more in our other technology related article or blog.
